TOTALITARIAN ALPHABET

BURNT ALPHABET

2020-In progress

  • Wood carving

  • Site-specific intervention

  • Art action

In “Totalitarian Alphabet” I use drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, and video, I am inspired on the borders of totalitarian countries, specifically in former Czechoslovakia, where I was born. As it is well known, our highly guarded borders were built with wooden fences and barbed wire. The billboards took specific forms that I adopt as signs and reinterpret as letters in particular: “Y”, “I”, “X”, “T”. Based on a particular territory, I expand my questioning, trying to address universal issues of “freedom”, “borders” and “migration; in short, transit between nations.

In the series called “Arson”, I build wooden sculptural objects in the form of these four letters: “Y”, “X”, “T”, “I”. The sculptures are meant to be burned. In this sense, my work reveals from the fire, the symbols and signs of “power” written in a territory.
