BLACK FLAG
COUNTER-MONUMENT, ACTION IN - SITU
EMBROIDERY OF FABRIC: TEXTILE, THREAD.
DIMENSIONS: 12 X 1.08 M
CHEB, CZECH REPUBLIC
2022
The Black Flag is a counter-monument in memory of the people murdered by the Czechoslovak communist regime while attempting to cross the border. It consists of a black fabric measuring 12 × 1.8 meters, onto which the names of the victims are hand-embroidered.
Each name, inscribed through a slow and manual process, stands as a remembrance of lives that were taken and reduced to silence.
In an in situ action, the flag was dragged through the streets of my hometown, Cheb—one of the central cities of the Sudeten region, where many people arrived with the hope of crossing the border. In this context, the flag becomes dirty and torn, retaining its rips and stains as a reminder of our history of violence, displacement, and heavily guarded borders.
