In “Totalitarian Alphabet” I use drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, and video, I am inspired on the borders of totalitarian countries, specifically in former Czechoslovakia, where I was born. As it is well known, our highly guarded borders were built with wooden fences and barbed wire. The billboards took specific forms that I adopt as signs and reinterpret as letters in particular: “Y”, “I”, “X”, “T”. Based on a particular territory, I expand my questioning, trying to address universal issues of “freedom”, “borders” and “migration; in short, transit between nations.

In the series “IXTY XTIY TIXY” I ink paper with graphite and through perforations with nail or needle, I “write” the four letters of my TOTALITARIAN ALPHABET.

On the obverse, the letter appears transparently on a black background; on the reverse, the almost imperceptible letter “writes” on a white background.
There are two essential processes: drilling and lighting. By piercing the paper, the incisions absorb the light and reveal the truth, hidden in the gaze of old meshes, silent witnesses of the crimes that have occurred on the guarded borders.
